Training Program for Landscape Professionals

The Smartscape program was developed collaboratively by Arizona water providers and water agencies, professional trade associations, and industry. The landscape industry has embraced the training, and Smartscape has become a recognized and valued program in much of the state.

The Arizona Municipal Water Users Association sponsors the Smartscape Program in Maricopa County, in part with funding from the Arizona Department of Water Resources. In Pima County, the program is sponsored by Tucson Water. These agencies recognize that skilled, knowledgeable green industry professionals are critical to outdoor water management and ensuring that our landscapes and communities continue to thrive.

The first workshop series launched in Phoenix and Tucson in 1994, and Smartscape's popularity continues to increase.

Workshop attendees learn the basics of efficient design, installation, and maintenance of landscapes and irrigation systems through 20 hours of training presented by local experts. Classes are interactive and include hands‐on learning to build relationships between attendees and instructors.

Smartscape is endorsed by the Arizona Landscape Contractors' Association (ALCA) and the Arizona Nursery Association (ANA) and frequently collaborates with the Arizona chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (AzASLA).
